Doodling my heart out about all things 'creative' ...
Thursday, March 5, 2009
Show me the money, honey!
How much money is ‘enough money’? I always have people come up to me and ask, “What do you do for a living mate?”. And after I’ve given them all that spiel on ideation and creativity, they go, “So how much money do you make?”. I mean what the F man. Half these people (well, make it nearly ALL) are stuck up in ruddy jobs that only lets them exercise their rusty thumbs to do a Ctrl C and a Ctrl V. They create absolute zilch their whole lives, going about their zombie-ite existence and making their parents go, “Oh, my son works for this fancy company you know. Makes money in dollars”. And all of this, only for that pseudo satisfaction of being able to count xyz rupees at the end of the month. Nobody wants a career. All they want is a job; and still, unfortunately so, THEIR cheeks are what all relatives want to pinch and squeeze in every fucking social gathering.

Now before I send out the wrong signal, lemme clear the air. I don’t want any grubby hand on my cheek, however adorable the intent maybe, squeezing it in an affectionate fit. My girl pinches me enough to compensate for the rest of the populace and boy am I glad for that or what! What I hate, is people signing me off as a no-brainer the minute I tell them I’m making a fraction of what their s/w engineering nincompoops are making.

WTF! I probably tax my brain more than all those s/w geeks ever do in their entire swathe of 24 hours. My profession necessitates I think round the clock, address real world problems, and solve them successfully. Every application my s/w counterpart writes a program for, has only a handful of algorithms that ring right in the binary scheme of things. The solution is a given and the codes they write are well, already defined. I write programs too. I write them for real people, mapping the entire spectrum of human emotions, which if laid in a straight line, would encircle our planet a zillion times and more.

It’s easy writing a program for a car accessory that needs to beep if something other than a perfect fit of a key is shoved into its arse. But it’s definitely not easy writing an ad for a vodka that is pink in colour, costs over 3 grand, can be drunk neat, targets the ‘muaaaaaaah daaaaaaaahling’ crowd, and goes by the name of Pinky! It’s easy writing code for an investment bank whose coffers once filled will spew out the exact amount figure that’s crammed in, right down to the last dime. But hallelujah, it ain’t easy understanding why people would shop in a Stella McCartney shop, or buy a Gucci bag (try asking Paris Hilton why she likes sporting Gucci bags. Even with all that drivel in her head, she’ll probably come up with umpteen number of reasons why the bag’s gonna make her go “wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!”). It’s probably easy writing a program for the electronic Rolex inside the hallowed turfs of Wimbledon. Every time Freddie hits an ace and his pleasantly plump girl smiles beatifically at him, the camera also pans on the Rolex and the time it screams with pin point precision. But try writing an ad for a Tommy watch and understand the sea of ‘Should I, shouldn’t I?’ thoughts a consumer goes through before he makes the purchase, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

I’m not saying all techno geeks are dumb. I’m only saying that my thinking and involvement with my gray cells to offer communication solutions to brands is greater than what my friends with fancy job titles and pay packages do. Money’s gonna come with time. And hopefully, so will fame and flashbulbs. And that’s when I’ll look at you, you cheek pinching dumb aunty, and say, “Fuck You”. Till then, you can do all the googlee-wooglee-wosh you want to guys with big pay checks and uninteresting lives. My time’s gonna come; not to get pinched, instead to give you the finger.

I quit my software techie job for exactly this reason. I got bored in a year!! Thankfully I have better things to look forward to in life now than typing lines of code. Fame and flasbulbs would definitely happen to you. Way to go!
BTW the new template is great :-)

Wow maga!!! You know sooo much about the software industry...
By the way, when you are famous with all the flashbulbs around and the world (the world of pinky vodka fans and Gucci bag owners and Oh! PH herself) is applauding for you and you are showing the finger screaming "Fuckkk youuuu", we'd be sitting quietly in front of our comps creating interfaces like Blogger (where all you creative fellows write blogs) and keep making money out of it and yeah... let me create an interface so that you can show your finger online!!! :)

    @ keerthi:
lemme make a few things clear bef u again fly off the handle.

    a) i have nothing against s/w engineers. i respect them immensely and i admit it takes a lot of intellectual effort to power the planet, the way you guys do ... i'm not even denying the fact that the future of just about anything n everything under the sun, will be rooted on the techno foundation of the codes and programs u folks write; case in point being the medium i'm currently choosing to vent my rants, which is an intricate quagmire of codes known to lesser mortals like us as the 'blog'... what i despise is the halo around the IT profession when other fields are dissed with utter ignorance ... so maybe ur contention that 'ignorance is bliss' will sit more prettily with the aam junta that disses my profession and eulogises urs ...

    b) if the thought of sittinq quietly in front of a comp and making money is how u wanna educate me bout ur profession, den i hate admitting that it's a real bad and feeble pitch from ur end... i would have made a better and more vociferous pitch in favour of your profession than the one you have made!

    c) my finger, all thru the article, has always been aimed at the dumb aunts who mollycuddle nethin with even the slightest brush of IT ... i have never even so much as launched a personal vendetta against the IT guys themselves ... if a sarcastic 'interface creation' is ur idea of a rebuttal, then it ain't just laughable, ur faint attempts at dissing my profession, by unsuccessful too ...

    d) ignorance is never bliss ... i would have never gone on this tirade if i din't have the faintest clue what u guys do for a livin ... besides, i still rest my case, that i knw more about ur profession than u knw bout mine ... so 'ignorance' is only a fallacious relative, at least in this context, don't u think ...

    e) u might find the usage of F expletives profane ... but given that we in my industry don't need an excuse to bandy it around at the drop of a hat's shadow, u must be taking my choice of language with a pinch o salt ...

    @know IT all:
1a. If you really haven't got anything against s/w engineers, why are you talking about our work?
    1b.If you think
    that we do only copy-paste,
that we use only handful of algorithms,
that we don't think of our careers,
    you are definitely ignorant.

2.For me, a car accessory which beeps when a duplicate key is inserted is more a "real world problem" than an ad for pinky vodka.

3.If you really think that only in "ad making" you have to think about other people, just look around and count the things we have created for you and how they have made your life easy. Do you think we just wrote a program for that without thinking who would be using it and how their brains work?

4.You think your profession is great. That's really good. That doesn't mean you can shit about my profession. You might be called a "creative". When you become famous I'll be right there to clap for you. But don't be under the misconception that only YOUR brain is being used and we are all sitting here doing nothing. You might say that you respect IT guys and don't have anything against them but actually what you have done in your blog is trying to shit on IT guys.

5.But I enjoyed reading your blog. I guess you did not see the smiley at the end of my comment. Reading what other people think of our profession... It was absolutely hilarious man... Imagining people seeing us as zombies and thinking that we do absolutely shit... I laughed through the entire article.

6.Finally I'm not trying to educate you about my profession. How can I teach the one who "knows more about my profession than i know of his"? All I'm telling you is, we wouldn't really care if you show us the finger. (If the finger is pointed at aunties, why all the comment about our work and pay packages?)

PS: Please remove the note "brickbats n bouquets, mosht welcum !!". I see that brickbats are not welcome here.

Ok maga. Let's not fight over this. I know that your profession is much more interesting and creative than ours. I know that you wrote this out of frustration that people only recognize IT guys.
Even I have faced it. People ask me why I haven't gone onsite till now, why my package is less compared to other IT guys.
But if I tell them that that is because I love what I'm doing now, they don't understand.
But I felt bad that you generalized to all IT professionals.
You see, it's not our fault that IT guys are recognized. I have never felt that what others do is inferior to mine. I feel even you should not think that you use more brain than us. Thats all.

@ my sensitiv aaptha mitra keerthi,

lo lowde, the 'copy paste' analogy was sumthin i used after hearin a fren o mine, who works wit a pharma major as an analyst (n this has nothin to do with IT da), to describe what he does for a livin ... sorry i didn't make that clear in my arti ...

A pinky ad or nethin in that genre is not all that i have done or will do ... i'm workin on a kick ass of a pitch where i need to sell insurance to HIV infected patients (?!) ... n get this, this NGO is backed majorly by the Belinda-Gates foundation !! ... so why would i diss ur profession when clearly, ur IT czar Bill Gates himself, has given me this wonderful opportunity to bite my teeth into sumthin that interestin and hatke :) ...

i probably don't respect a small fraction of ur ilk, but i definitely respect the large multitude of 'em like you, who do not see a profession in IT only as a vehicle to draw ur monthly salary from ... even then, my tirade was so not against ur IT brethren ... like i said, if it wasn't for Bill Gates, I prob wouldn't have gotten to work on the most exiting pitch till date ...

my girl's a techie herself... y on earth would i jeopardise my nuptial chances with her, by trashing ur profession !! every prof has it's pros n cons ... mine has 'em too ... walk into any agency and you'll see the number of people who claim they are creative whilst they so are not ... likewise, i hav seen scores of ppl in ur prof whose radical ideas have given us great n cult inventions... the I Pod changed the way music was heard and 'seen' around the world ... Gaming has becum so frickin 'engaging' that it's difficult to see how outdoor games will even survive a few decades from now... aren't dese radical inventions ... y on earth would i be presumptous enough to say u guys don't think n we guys do ...

u hav strong principles n u're jolly well stickin to dat by not lettin small talk on why u haven't been onsite, affect u ... all the kudos to u for that mate, not many ppl i knw, in any industry, who would let go of an opportunity to go abroad n live the dollar dream; n sacrifice a more fulfillin dream back home ...

bout the finger, so much has been written ... i give my finger to all kinds of things on the spur o the moment whn i feel i hv been wronged ... i reiterate, the finger was never against the IT guys themselves... it was only against the aunties n aunties alone ...

for all u know, i could have drawn parallels b/w the finance industry n ours, as even they have a cocky n supremely-self-important air about 'em ... the fact that i choose IT was only incidental and not intentional ... like i said, all professions have their pros n cons, n as long the pros overweigh the cons, the world at large will benefit from this atlantis-esque approach by all of us (i know i love ayn rand! honest, honest, i'm tryin to get ovr her!)...

every profession is interestin n creative, not just mine ... in one of my previous artis, i hav spoken bout my rendition of 'creativity'... i have never made the grave error, ever, of saying that only my profession is creative n others are not ...n i never will either mate...

Brickbats n bouquets aye, i still wouldn't wanna change any of the tete-a-tete we had over this arti, as questionin things is what starts off a 'phenomemon' ... in this case, both of us have ... so it's good for the atlantis we have envisioned :)
